NitroCapt AB, a leading innovator in sustainable agriculture, is accelerating the development of a groundbreaking chemical process that could revolutionize the production of nitrogen-based fertilizers. With an investment from SLU Holding and other visionary financiers, NitroCapt aims to establish a cost-effective and emission-free method for large-scale fertilizer production, addressing a significant global challenge for agriculture and the climate.
Currently, nitrogen fertilizer production accounts for approximately 2.5% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. Despite the critical role of fertilizers in ensuring global food security, no cost-effective emission-free process has been able to compete with conventional production methods. However, NitroCapt’s innovative technology, which only requires water and renewable electricity, has the potential to set a new standard for fossil-free fertilizer production on a large scale.
“We are incredibly excited to have the opportunity, alongside visionary investors, to develop a solution to a major global challenge for agriculture and the climate. Thanks to this support, we can now begin recruiting a team of highly qualified engineers and take the first steps towards commercializing our process,” said Gustaf Forsberg, founder and CEO of NitroCapt.
The company recently sought 1 million Euros in capital to advance its development, and the response was overwhelming. The oversubscribed funding round reached 18 million SEK, with an additional 10 million SEK in grants awarded. In total, NitroCapt plans to invest approximately 30 million SEK over the next two years. Notable investors include LRF Ventures, ALMI Invest Greentech, InnoEnergy, Graphmatech-founder Björn Lindh, and SLU Holding.
Henrik Landgren, business advisor at SLU Holding, expressed enthusiasm for NitroCapt’s technology, stating, “NitroCapt’s technology has the potential to drive a significant transformation in fertilizer production and aligns perfectly with our mission to support and invest in sustainable innovations. By establishing themselves at the Green Innovation Park in Ultuna, we believe NitroCapt will become a valuable resource and inspire other companies to develop innovations for the global market.”
Founded in 2016 by Gustaf Forsberg and Peter Baeling, NitroCapt AB is part of InnoEnergy’s Highway program, which has provided financial support for the company’s activities thus far. Forsberg, a PhD graduate from SLU, has been instrumental in the development of ThermoSeed technology for chemical-free seed treatment, while Baeling, a chemical engineer, has developed the world’s largest sterile continuous fermentor.
